Electro Magnetic Body Sculpting (HIEMT) + Radio Frequency

The electro magnetic body sculpting treatment harnesses the power of high intensity electro-magnetic technology (HIEMT).  The treatment can contract your muscles 20,000 times in half an hour using electromagnetic stimulation (don’t confuse this with the electrostimulation of devices like Slendertone which are much less effective and a completely different technology).

The before and after result of the treatment on my own abdominal muscles can be seen on the attached photo (results can vary).

Each session is the equivalent of doing 20,000 sit ups or 20,000 squats in half an hour! A course of four treatments over two weeks can produce results equivalent to working out at the gym for six months in people who are at or within a stone of their ideal weight.

The treatment can also burn fat in two ways:

  • the muscles use up more energy when they get bigger, and so use up fat stores.
  • added radio frequency on the treatment paddles also burns some fat. This feature can be turned off if required, on areas such as the buttocks.

To summarise, electro magnetic body sculpting (HIEMT) can:

  • Tone and build muscle
  • Burn fat
  • Tighten and lift

Who is an ideal candidate?

Ideal candidates will have a BMI (body mass index) of less than 30 and are within 7-14 kilos (15-30lbs) of their ideal weight. They should be looking to improve the appearance of small amounts of fat on their abdomens, wanting a butt lift or seeking to tone other areas such as arms, legs or back. It is not suitable for use on the pectoral muscles. The weight considerations do not apply to candidates wishing to tighten their pelvic floor muscles. All prospective candidates should have no implanted devices which contain metal or electronics such as pacemakers or copper coils (dental implants are ok). Epilepsy is also a contraindication to treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of four or six treatments are recommended over two or three weeks.

Which areas can be treated?

EMSculpt areas

Arms, abdomen, inner thighs, inner calves, love handles, bottom, outer thighs. The pelvic floor can also be treated with the special “seat” attachment, which we have. This is the same technology used medically to treat urinary incontinence through strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles.

How are muscles built?

The targeted muscles are transformed by the supramaximal contractions that enable 100% of the muscles to be exercised 100% of the time. The encourages hypertrophy of the muscles by stimulating the growth of new muscle fibres, thus increasing their density and size. In addition, fat in the area is reduced as not only is fat burned to supply energy to the contracting muscles, but the addition of radio frequency reduces the amount of fat still further.

How many treatments can you have in a day?

Bottom, abdominals, arms and legs can all be treated. The pelvic floor can also be treated with the special “seat” attachment.

What does it feel like?

It feels like you are doing a high intensity workout without putting in any effort. Afterwards, you are likely to have some muscle soreness as though you have exercised vigorously. The treatment incorporates a muscle warm up, more intense phases and then a cool down to disperse lactic acid from the muscles to minimise post treatment discomfort.  Levels are adjusted to suit the clients age, gender and treatment area and can also be adjusted to suit client comfort and preferences.

Is there any downtime?

No, you are free to carry on with your day. Also, there are no visible marks that a treatment has been performed.

Is there any scientific proof it works?

There are many research papers carried out on the leading brand that show High Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic technology (HIEMT) is a safe and effective treatment.

Can it be used to treat diastasis recti caused by pregnancy?

Diastasis recti is the partial or complete separation of the rectus abdominus muscles of the abdomen, which occurs during pregnancy. Before childbirth, these muscles meet down the midline at centre of the abdomen, but they separate as they allow a baby to grow. Often the muscles will reconnect after childbirth, but sometimes they remain separate.

If a few months after giving birth, your tummy still looks as though you are pregnant even though you are back to a normal weight, diastasis recti may well be the cause. Sometimes the increasing size of the uterus causes the muscles to stretch so much they lose their elasticity, so they are unable to reconnect.

High intensity electromagnetic muscle therapy can help to repair the gap, lessening it by in the region of 10-11%, on average, after a course of 4 sessions. Muscles in the region get stronger and the rf (radio frequency) also reduces the fat layer on the abdomen.

What are the contraindications to treatment?
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart Problems
  • Uncontrolled thyroid problems
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Kidney failure
  • Cancer
  • Pacemaker, defibrillator, stent, drug pump, nerve stimulator
  • Metal or electronic implants (dental implants are ok)
  • A copper IUD
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • It’s not recommended whilst menstruating
What sort of results can I expect and when do they occur?

Typical results include an increase in muscle volume and density and a reduction in fat percentage in the treated area. An improvement in muscle definition is seen in clients where the initial layer of body fat is not too deep. You are likely to feel a difference after the first treatment, but the best results are seen about two to four weeks after the last session.

What is the aftercare?

The aftercare is minimal, but clients are recommended to wait an hour after treatment before eating.

It’s also advisable during the treatment course to drink more water and eat more high protein foods e.g. lean meat, chicken, fish, soya.

Can I combine fat freezing with Electro Magnetic Body Sculpting?

Absolutely you can. I would recommend reducing your fat layer initially with fat freezing, then afterwards having a series of high intensity electromagnetic muscle strengthening treatments to provide improved definition and tone to your silhouette.
