Brow Asymmetry

Brow Asymmetry: Correcting and Improving the Symmetry of the Brows

Brow asymmetry is a common concern that affects the overall balance and harmony of the face. While most people have naturally uneven eyebrows, the degree of asymmetry can vary, causing dissatisfaction with one’s appearance. For those seeking to correct brow asymmetry, microblading offers a semi-permanent solution. This article discusses the available options for improving brow symmetry.

Understanding Brow Asymmetry

Brow asymmetry refers to the uneven positioning of the eyebrows in terms of shape, height, or length. This condition can result from various factors, including genetics, facial muscle imbalances, aging, or previous eyebrow treatments. While a slight difference between brows is natural and often unnoticeable, significant asymmetry can affect facial aesthetics, leading to a lack of confidence and a desire for correction.

Challenges of Correcting Brow Asymmetry with Microblading

Microblading is a popular technique for enhancing and reshaping eyebrows and is good for addressing asymmetry. Still, some challenges arise.

Correcting asymmetrical brows with microblading requires a high level of precision and skill. I must carefully assess the natural brow structure and determine the best approach to create a harmonious look. I measure and map the brows to ensure they are as symmetrical as possible, a task that can be complex and time-consuming. It is nevertheless critical in achieving the best look possible. I also involve the client as much as possible to get their approval for the mapping before any strokes are placed.

Whilst microblading can enhance brow shape and fullness, it has limitations when dealing with significant asymmetry. It works by depositing pigment into the skin to mimic natural hair strokes, but it cannot alter the underlying bone structure, nor the muscle positioning that contributes to asymmetry. Therefore, it may not fully correct severe brow discrepancies.

In particular, where one brow is higher than the other, compromises may have to be made, accepting perhaps the need to pluck a few hairs under the lower brow and adding a little to the top of the brow.  I am always interested to see how the client puts the makeup on her own brows, as that will give me an indication of the aesthetic that she is hoping to achieve.

Healing

The healing process after microblading can also impact the final result. As the skin heals, the pigment may fade unevenly, especially if one brow experiences more movement or friction than the other. This can exacerbate existing asymmetry, requiring additional touch-up sessions to achieve the desired balance. It is standard to book in a top up about four weeks after the original treatment.

Many clients expect perfect symmetry, but achieving this is sometimes impossible due to the natural differences in facial structure. There are limits and I aim to make my clients aware about the limitations of microblading and help set realistic expectations for a successful outcome.

In Brief…

Correcting brow asymmetry is a complex process that requires careful consideration of various factors, including the severity of asymmetry, the client’s goals, and the limitations of each treatment option. Nevertheless, microblading is a powerful tool for enhancing brows. By understanding the challenges and exploring the available options, clients can achieve more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing eyebrows with microblading.

Case Study

The client below not only had very fine, overplucked brows but there was a large degree of asymmetry with the left brow about 6mm higher than the right brow. I was able to correct this to a degree by lifting the lower brow of the right eye as much as I could, whilst keeping the mapping close to the top of the upper left brow. The client will have to pluck a few hairs from under the right eye, but she understood that this was the best compromise available whilst avoiding “two brows” (heaven forbid) and improving the overall symmetry of the final look.

The improvement in symmetry can clearly be seen. It’s not completely perfect but it’s the best that can be achieved without ending up erasing half a brow or making the brows too thick. My client and I were both delighted with the result.
